A Tribute To Happy

"Happy"
June 1985 - January 29, 1998
A friend, a companion, a soulmate.

Happy was a professional athlete, a racing greyhound. Happy started racing at 18 months old. He raced until he was five years old. We were told that Happy was well known around all of the tracks, as he won many races and always had a smile for everyone. Yes, greyhounds can smile!

When he was five he started getting slower and dropped below 45 miles an hour. He was retired. It gets a little hazy as to what happened to him next, but we traced back that he was given to the University of Florida, Research Center, where he spent the next two years of his life.

From there we traced him to a local Vet Clinic where he lived as a blood donor for 2 1/2 years until we found him. Then, Happy's life took a turn for the better. My husband and I saw him and with a determination unknown to many, persuaded the Clinic to give him to us.

We took him and we were introduced to Retired Racing Greyhounds. Happy taught us what unconditional love was. Even after all he had been through, he still loved everyone. He brought joy to us every day of his life. He was truly my husband's best friend. Because of Happy, we founded The National Greyhound Foundation. Since March 1994, we have adopted over 1000 Retired Racing Greyhounds.

On January 29, 1998, Happy passed on, and waits for us at Rainbow Bridge, in the arms of our Creator.
