The Ocala Rescue

URGENT: 14 Greyhounds need help in Ocala

The CRY of the Greyhounds went out ...
and AMERICA Answered

Welcome to the 1st Filmed
Internet Greyhound Rescue

While everyone was enjoying Thanksgiving Turkey, dedicated groups of Greyhound Rescue workers spent their holiday making a Happy Thanksgiving for 14 desperate greyhounds in Ocala Florida. The weekend before, six greyhounds were"PUT DOWN" on the orders of their owner. Unfortunately he didn't know how to get them adopted. This time, when the order came to"PUT DOWN" the rest of them by Monday morning, Kennel Manager, Bill Pierce, said, "No, I won't do it!". "I've had nightmares ever since I dropped those dogs off." Just the week before he had helped destroy six beautiful greyhounds because of their owner's order. "Never again, I just won't do it. There has to be a better way for these dogs" and he found it. On the Internet.

He found a list of Greyhound Rescue Groups and called several. He called his boss, Ed Lithgoth who was relieved and agreed to the adoption of these retired greyhounds as pets! And the phone began to ring. Joan Schemekau of Brandywine Downs Greyhound Rescue in Ocala was the first Rescuer on the Scene. She only had room for one girl and took her home with her. She put out a call for help on the GHRESCUE-L on the internet giving Bill's phone number.

Liza of Jacksonville made a couple of trips. First trip she took Halfpint^^, 12 yrs, Duffy 10 yrs. and was supposed to take Lena. Went back and got Nurse Fathead, 12, Vadar and Thunder. And that was the beginning of her Rescue Organization in Jacksonville, FL, now known as Halfpint^^Haven Borzoi and Greyhound Adoptions, Inc.

I'm reporting this between rescues, but if I've got it straight, I want to quote from Toni Sumner's email who did a great job reporting the Rescue. The headline read, "10 Greyhounds in Need in Fla. URGENT!!!!!!" Paul then posted it on GH-L and P-GA with like results. The phone started ringing. Robin Wiseman of North Carolina took the ball and ran with it! People from all over the country offered help. Within 24 hours, all of the dogs were spoken for. "Many thanks and a great cheer for Robin Wiseman - 3 dogs, GPA in the 843 area code - 4 dogs, Jonna in Syracuse - 8 dogs, Ed in Jacksonville - 9 dogs, Bev in Homosassa - any leftovers, plus medical care and food!"

Upon returning home from the Thanksgiving Holiday, I found messages on my email. I immediately called Bill and told him I would help pay for any food or medical bills he needed and take any excess dogs he couldn't find a home for. Monday afternoon, Virginia and I went out to the Farm where we've rescued many dogs before, and filmed Bill and the dogs for a new Infomercial we're making promoting GREYHOUND ADOPTATHON 2000, which the NGF is sponsoring this coming year. Bill gave us some great input about these dogs in his filmed interview, and how to help save more of them. You'll see this rescue on national television in the coming New Year. With kennel managers like Bill and other caring owners, we can win the battle, one dog at a time.

Congratulations to everyone that participated in this wonderful Rescue. Take a look at some of these wonderful animals who now have homes, thanks to you!

Granny is pictured here while undergoing surgery for severe laceration obtained in a dog fight while in the Ocala kennel. Beverly Sebastian, Director of the National Greyhound Foundation looks on as Dr. K. C. Nayfield and his assistant sutures her laceration and insert drains that will assist in the treatment of her infection.

Volunteers, Randy and Joyce, of the National Greyhound Foundation are pictured here with Granny. These volunteers provident assistance with both transport and medical care for which the NGF is grateful. Help like this will help save one greyhound at a time. Without them we would not been able to do this rescue.

Granny, with her new owners, Chuck and Marge, checks out her new home. The National Greyhound Foundation will assist her new owners with the medical care needed for her complete recovery. Grannie is now becoming an Internet expert as she sleeps by Chucks feet as he works all day.

They all are adopted as of today December 6, 1999.

We would like to thank all the private citizens and rescue groups that help make this rescue a success. It could not have been done without your help.
