Sunbutter POP, NGF Spokesdog
1995-2008
The Passing of a Friend

By Ferd Sebastian

Sunbutter

"Sunbutter," he was a friend of mine. His real name was Sunbutter Pop, but we just called him Sunbutter or Sunny. You did not have to call twice, he was always ready for a new adventure.

Sunbutter and children

Sunbutter loved the children
Whether he was showing off to a Kindergarten Class or softly nudging Down Syndrome Children, Sunbutter was always there to cheer up or support children. Always representing Greyhounds in the finest light.

Sunbutter and a manatee

Sunbutter's favorite animal friend
Sunny also liked to swim. He would go into the river behind our house and swim and play with the manatees. He would stick his head under water and go nose to nose with them. Everyone that came over was amazed at Sunny.

Sunbutter and friends

Jackie & Pumpkin with Sunbutter
Sunny, also fit right in with our female greys. Bitches he called them. He would strut and throw dirt into the air as they would watch admiringly and bark their approval. One little girl, Jackie, was very special to him. She became more so as time went on. We lost Happy and then Pumpkin passed away. Then it was only Sunny and Jackie. It was hard to separate them. Then Jackie, died of Cancer. Sunbutter was alone.

Sunbutter along

He was sad and we tried to cheer him up. As we have greys passing through all the time, we would bring one over occasionally to see what would happen. Sunny would pay no attention to them. Sometimes he would just be grumpy and turn away and lay down.

Sunbutter in love

Then one day we had a greyhound returned. Her name was, Cinderella. Her owners mother was terminally ill and she had to go and stay with her. Her mother lived in an apartment and they would not take dogs. So Cinderella was returned. She came to our house to stay over night while we were looking for a new home. Sunny, was in love again. So Cinderella, found her new home.

Cinderella and Sunbutter

Cinderella with Sunbutter, Love Buddies
Sunny and Cinderella, shared everything. He would go hunting and she would follow behind and watch admiringly. At dinner time they would eat together. He would share her bowl and she would share his. There was never a harsh word or a tiny growl. They had two dog beds pushed together and they would share those. Now Sunny is gone with Cancer and Cinderella is alone.

Beverly and I are in our 70's, I do not know how many more friends I can bury. A piece of your heart goes out with each one. Sometimes still I will call Cinderella, but say Sunbutter instead. When I do she gets up and goes out into the yard and looks around. Just to see if maybe he has come home. I try to get her to sleep in the bedroom with us but she will not. She sleeps on their beds in the living room.

You can see Sunbutter has made a lasting impression on all of us. And we are not quit through mourning him yet. When the mourning is over there will just be sweet memories like I have for Happy, Pumpkin Pie and Jackie. Each one had their own personality and their own special way of loving you. So take good care of your greyhound and love him ever chance you get. For a friend is a terrible thing to loose.

You can read the three part story of a Racing Greyhound no one wanted who ended up as our Second Spokesdog. Sunbutter took Happy's place when he was too old to carry on. Now Sunbutter is with Happy at Rainbow Bridge. With over 5000 greys adopted and still counting, I know that Beverly is going to get a warm welcome as she crosses that bridge.
